Something extreme must occur in order to deepen one’s connection to life, warmth, and beauty. Each youth looks for that extreme occurrence and will drive horses and cars full of horsepower as fast as possible to break through to that place. They will explore the depths of the earth and fall into great depressions in order to enter that cave. They will climb trees, mountains, and break sound and light barriers in order to touch one feather of the firebird in its flight. They will fall disastrously into the depths of love and lose all contact with the everyday world in order to feel the darkness that can only be lit by their fire.
… Youths attempt to get beyond the limits of their own family and childhood and to overcome the inertia that stands like a wall at the border between boy and man. … [The young male] is driven to seek an outer experience that will match his inner heat and turmoil. If he doesn’t get connected to the mysteries, to the warmth and beauty at the heart of the culture, he may burn with rage and injustice, or turn cold with resentment and depression.
-Michael Meade, Men and the Water of Life
The Spirit Warrior Immersions help boys at the brink of manhood to step into the inner fire that draws them in and drives them on. In communion with the mysteries, youth find the soul-nurturing that they have been seeking, and are given tools to sustain them through the flames of their life. We have found over and over that our participants will dive right into those inner flames when the chance allows. As mentors and guides, we only need to create the opportunity, and show them the door.
